These days, everyone is active online. Facebook posts, tweets, Instagram photos and blogs are all easily searchable; and many Human Resources departments are checking you out before you even come in for an interview. Below are a few things to keep in mind if you’re actively seeking a new employment opportunity.
Up Your Privacy Settings
Make sure all of your profiles on the various sites are set to private. Also, social media sites frequently change their privacy policies, so it is a good idea to check in from time to time and make sure your profile is as private as possible.
Watch What You Post
Even if your social media profiles are private, some posts and pictures can still be found using a google search. Think twice before sharing an off color joke, and un-tag yourself from any inappropriate photos, especially those showing drug or alcohol use.
Use Social Media to Your Advantage
Social media isn’t always a detriment to your job search, it can also be a great way to promote yourself. Spend time creating a thorough LinkedIn page, highlighting your education, work experience, skills and any special achievements. If you have a blog, use it to highlight trends or your opinions on topics in the field you have experience in, or the one you hope to break into. Showing an active interest in what is going on in your field or the employment marketplace in general will show an employer that you are engaged and willing to learn and grow.
